With the support and guidance of the GBS Enterprise Team, student Daniel Read has successfully relaunched a specialist ice hockey business while navigating the realities of study, work, and family life.

Currently studying Business Management at GBS, Daniel is in the foundation year of his four-year degree. The flexibility of the programme has allowed him to balance academic commitments with running a business - while also caring for his newborn son.

Established in 2022 and relaunched in 2025, Entity Ice Hockey supplies new and nearly new ice hockey products to players, coaches, and fans across both B2C and B2B markets.

Enterprise Support Beyond the Classroom

Daniel credits the GBS Enterprise Team with helping him gain clarity, confidence, and control over his business operations.

“Access to data, payment systems, and practical guidance has made a huge difference,” he said. “Revenue has stabilised and grown without increasing stock levels or budgets - which has been a massive win.”

The Enterprise Team’s open-door approach has also supported Daniel through unexpected challenges.

“When I received an invoice for business rates, I was able to get immediate advice,” he explained. “That support stopped me from panicking and helped me deal with it properly.”

Learning From Experience

One of the most valuable lessons Daniel has taken from his Enterprise Officer, Mark Crabtree, is the importance of cashflow.

“Businesses don’t fail - they just run out of money,” he said. “That advice has helped me avoid several costly mistakes.”

Early-stage guidance also helped Daniel reassess the direction of his business, leading to the decision to relaunch independently with a clearer product focus.

A Clearer Vision for Growth

By refining his market, strengthening his brand message, and improving routes to market through social media and online platforms, Daniel has laid strong foundations for future expansion.

Ongoing support and regular progress check-ins continue to keep him accountable and focused.

“I’ve moved from uncertainty to stability,” Daniel reflected. “I still have challenges ahead - but now I know where I’m heading.”
