Terms of Reference

  • To advise the Board of Directors on academic and professional standards and enhancing the quality of learning opportunities for students.
  • To consider and approve reports and responses to GBS partner awarding bodies and other external agencies (Office for Students, QAA, OIAHE) related to higher education provision at GBS.
  • To present to the Board for review and approval an annual report on academic governance.
  • To maintain and have oversight of academic and professional standards and the operation of quality assurance systems across GBS’s campuses.
  • To consider and advise the Board of Directors on GBS’s vision, mission, and strategic plan as the relate to academic and educational matters.
  • To discuss and advise the Board of Directors on matters concerned with teaching, scholarship, research, and professional activities.
  • To approve the Academic Standards and Quality Manual and any new or significantly revised policies and procedures.
  • To discuss, approve, and monitor GBS’s Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy.
  • To approve and monitor the supporting strategies identified in the GBS Strategic Plan and related strategies.
  • To consider and discuss matters raised by student representative members of Academic Board.
  • To receive reports on and discuss matters concerned with student admissions, retention, achievement, and career progression.
  • To consider and approve proposals for new and significantly revised programmes and their constituent modules, and proposals for programme closure.
  • To discuss and advise on learning resources to enhance the student learning experience and consider matters referred to Academic Board by the Finance and Resources Committee.
  • To be updated on changing requirements of awarding bodies and other external agencies (QAA, Office for Students, OIAHE).
  • To advise the Chief Executive Officer, Provost, Academic Registrar and Deans on rules and processes concerning the conduct of students, including disciplinary procedures, suspension and expulsion.
  • To establish such sub-committees considered necessary for purposes enabling Academic Board to carry out its responsibilities, providing that each establishment is first approved by the Board of Directors.
  • To set up such working groups as it considers necessary to advise on such matters within its purview.
  • To maintain oversight and monitor implementation of GBS’s academic policies and student facing policies, including but not limited to, the Freedom of Speech Code of Practice, the Access and Participation Statement and the Safeguarding and Prevent Policy.
  • To advise the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer/Provost and Deans on the academic organisation of the School.
  • To refer, as it sees fit, to the Board of Directors for consideration and approval, as appropriate.
  • To advise on such matters as the Chief Executive Officer/Provost, Deans, Academic Registrar and Academic and Quality Director may refer to Academic Board
